How to estimate your max without testing it
Do a set with a weight you can handle for 3-8 clean reps, close to your limit but without breaking technique. The Epley formula, 1RM = weight × (1 + reps/30), converts that performance into your theoretical max. The Brzycki formula, weight × 36 / (37 − reps), is the cross-check: if the two estimates are close, the number is solid.
A direct max test only makes sense if you compete: for everyone else it's risk without reward, because the estimate drives your programming exactly the same way.
