Cable lateral raise: how to perform it.

The cable lateral raise fixes the dumbbell's main flaw: at the bottom, where the dumbbell weighs almost nothing, the cable is already pulling. Tension from the first inch to the last, and the side delt never gets to rest. For a lot of lifters, this is the single best upgrade to their shoulder routine.

01 · Set-up

Starting position

  • Pulley set low, single handle in the hand opposite the machine's side.
  • The cable runs BEHIND your body (or in front, but pick one and stick with it): keep the line of pull clean.
  • Stand side-on to the machine, torso tilted slightly away from the column, elbow half bent and locked in position.
02 · Step by step

Proper form

  1. Raise your arm out to the side in an arc, leading with the elbow.
  2. Stop with your hand just below shoulder height, elbow at roughly the same level.
  3. Hold the peak for an instant: the cable is pulling, you don't give in.
  4. Lower over a full 3 seconds, following the cable without letting it drag you.
  5. Don't let the tension rest at the bottom: that's exactly where the cable's advantage lives.
03 · Breathing

When to inhale, when to exhale

Exhale on the way up, inhale on the way down. The slow tempo on the descent is where the cable earns its keep.

04 · Watch out

Mistakes to avoid

Shrugging the shoulder

If the shoulder rises toward the ear, the traps are stealing the set. Keep the shoulder down, arc wide: that's the only way the delt actually works.

Leaning the torso to help

The side crunch that sneaks in on the way up is momentum in disguise. The torso stays locked in its starting tilt.

Letting the descent go slack

Letting the cable snap back in half a second throws away half the exercise. The slow eccentric is the whole reason you came to the cables.

DAWT tip. Try a drop-set finish: at failure on the cable, immediately move the pin down a couple of notches and keep going without pausing. Two of these at the end of a shoulder session and the side delt will remember it for days.

06 · FAQ

Quick answers

Cable lateral raises or dumbbell lateral raises?

The cable keeps tension on even at the bottom, where the dumbbell is nearly weightless: for the same perceived effort, total work on the delt is higher. Dumbbells stay convenient and effective: alternate between the two if you can; if you have to pick one for hypertrophy, the cable has a real edge.

Cable in front of or behind the body?

Behind the body aligns the resistance better with the side delt's function and keeps the path cleaner. In front is easier to set up. Try both and stick with whichever lets you feel the side delt without discomfort.
