Chest press: how to perform it.

The chest press is the bench with safety rails: same horizontal press, but the machine guides the path and lets you focus purely on pushing. Ideal for learning the movement pattern, stacking up volume safely, and finishing off your chest at the end of a session without needing a spotter.

01 · Set-up

Starting position

  • Adjust the seat: the handles should line up with your chest, not your shoulders.
  • Back and head against the pad, shoulder blades pulled tight and down against the backrest.
  • Feet flat on the floor, chest up: the machine guides the path, but you set the position.
02 · Step by step

Proper form

  1. Grip the handles and start with your chest in a slight stretch.
  2. Press forward until your arms are nearly extended, without locking out the elbows.
  3. Squeeze your chest for a beat at the top of the press.
  4. Return over 2-3 seconds, controlling the weight on the way back.
  5. Stop when your chest is fully stretched, without letting the weight stack rest on the pins.
03 · Breathing

When to inhale, when to exhale

Exhale as you press, inhale on the controlled return. Simple and steady: the machine handles the stability here.

04 · Watch out

Mistakes to avoid

Shoulders drifting forward

If your shoulders come off the backrest at the top of the press, your front delts are stealing the lockout. Keep your shoulder blades locked in place: push through the handles, not your shoulders.

Seat set up at random

Handles too high or too low change the exercise entirely and put extra stress on your shoulders. Thirty seconds spent adjusting the seat beats any extra set.

Range cut short by the load

Stopping halfway on the return to "handle the heavy weight" cuts out exactly the stretch phase, which is the most productive part. Better to drop a plate and use the full range.

DAWT tip. The chest press is the right spot for intensity techniques on chest day: rest-pause, drop sets, slow negatives. The machine's guided path protects you when the muscle is at its limit: take advantage of that at the end of your session.

06 · FAQ

Quick answers

Is the chest press as good as the bench press?

For the chest itself, pretty much: muscle growth is similar for equal effort. The bench press additionally trains stabilizers and coordination. Sensible approach: learn both, load up the bench press, stack volume on the chest press.

Flat or incline chest press?

Same logic as with bench presses: flat for overall chest development, incline for the upper chest. If your gym has both, alternate them across mesocycles.
